Relationships Between Shots (Blog #3)

For this blog spot I will be analyzing the editing of a scene from Hot Fuzz (2007).

Despite it being only a 35 second clip, the different shots is very fast-paced and you have to pay attention or else you will miss a scene. It starts off on a normal scene for the first 4 seconds or so and then it cuts immediately into a fast and short montage of different modes of transportation. In each mode of transportation the main focus is the non-existing emotions of Nicholas Angel.

The POV of this scene - and the movie - is 3rd person. The shot sizes are pretty standard and isn't all over the place.
The shot order goes something like this in the scene:
  1. Medium Long Shot
  2. Long Shot
  3. Medium Close Up
  4. Close Up
  5. Mid Shot
  6. Close Up
  7. Medium Long Shot
  8. Long Shot
  9. Mid Shot
  10. Close Up
  11. Big Close Up
  12. Mid Shot
  13. Long Shot
In the second half of the scene it shows him in a Taxi going through different towns to reach his destination. Every sign we see fades into the next, this emphasizing even more of his long journey of moving to a new town.

As far as movement goes there really isn't any, except for the transportations. In one particular shot it jumps from him being awake in the day to his head down sleeping at night. This edit shows his non movement and further helps the audience feel the character's mood.

This is it for my analysis of a short but very fast paced scene.
I very much recommend everyone to watch Hot Fuzz, if you haven't already, because it is a hilarious movie and is very smart with comedy.
