MOMI (Blog #4)

So I recently went to the Museum of Moving Images (MOMI) last Wednesday (5/2/18) instead of having a lecture. And this museum had everything from the "grandfathers" of projectors to even VR stuff. It was very interesting to experience these technologies in person. Although I'm learning about the film and editing process in class, it still was pretty cool to have a behind-the-scenes to films.      The first thing our tour guide showed and explained to us was these old-time projectors called Magic Lanterns, and they were basically dubbed the 'grandfathers' of projectors. The examples shown below these Lanterns were quite simple. A thing we all found weird, to us, was that all the backgrounds of these pictures were black.      The second thing he showed up was the Optical toys and the Zoetrope. I remember learning about these in first lecture I had in this film/media class. The guide demonstrated the both the Optical toys and the Zoetro...

Relationships Between Shots (Blog #3)

For this blog spot I will be analyzing the editing of a scene from Hot Fuzz  (2007).       Despite it being only a 35 second clip, the different shots is very fast-paced and you have  to pay attention or else you will miss a scene. It starts off on a normal scene for the first 4 seconds or so and then it cuts immediately into a fast and short montage of different modes of transportation. In each mode of transportation the main focus is the non-existing emotions of Nicholas Angel.        The POV of this scene - and the movie - is 3rd person. The shot sizes are pretty standard and isn't all over the place.  The shot order goes something like this in the scene: Medium Long Shot Long Shot Medium Close Up Close Up Mid Shot Close Up Medium Long Shot Long Shot Mid Shot Close Up Big Close Up Mid Shot Long Shot      In the second half of the scene it shows him in a Taxi going through different to...

What I Hear (Blog #2)

This past week, I walked around my neighborhood of Dyker Heights in Brooklyn for an hour or so.. It's not a typical neighborhood in New York where there's traffic and loud noises constantly. It's a lot more quiet but there is still constant activity. On the front end of the my area, there is a mix of apartment buildings with restaurants, salons, convenience stores, and so on and so forth. On the side of the blocks, it's more residential so it's filled with houses. It's busier on the front part because of all the stores and activities happening. As I was conducting my walk, it was around the late afternoon. Cars were going by, honking at the drivers in front and people were walking by me, chattering with family or friends. Now, because it's still Winter and still very cold, not too many pigeons were out and about, cooing on the streets. Now, the area that I live in there is a supermarket close by that has a parking lot attached. I could hear the car...

Artist Statement (Blog #1)

Hello, people reading my blog. Nice to meet you! My name is Yufan Liu and I was born on September 28, 1999 in good 'ole Brooklyn.      I moved around a lot as a child. I lived in China until I was about 4 and then moved back to Brooklyn. Then, the Summer after I finished 1st grade, I moved with my parents to York, PA. Life was great there, there was a lot of open space and I went to 2 different schools, the latter being the better one. And then again, in the beginning of 4th grade, me, my parents and my brother moved back to Brooklyn.      Growing up, my interests and future aspirations changed constantly. I wanted to become a teacher, a detective, an author, a vet, and so on and so forth. I never knew what I wanted to do with my life (and still don't).          I've always been interested in the Film/Media industry. It's fascinating seeing actors go into a character and can switch between their character's personality and th...
